What is Primary Care POCUS?

We are a group of GPs and acute medical physicians with an interest in bringing point of care ultrasound (POCUS) to the primary care setting. POCUS enhances our decision making capability in day to day practice both in the surgery and on home visits which overall improves the patient experience.

Our Primary Care POCUS team are passionate about providing primary care clinicians with high quality courses, remote supervision and the resources they need to become accredited in POCUS. We also bring like-minded clinicians together to support one another. We aim to deliver these skills not only to GPs, but also other clinicians such as physician associates, paramedics, nurses and physiotherapists.

How can POCUS benefit primary care clinicians?

The use of POCUS as a diagnostic aid in general practice empowers the clinician in their decision making, giving them confidence in their management plans and reducing unecessary referrals to secondary care.

POCUS is already evolving to become widely beneficial in it’s use in the secondary care setting to enhance efficiency of care by providing point of care diagnostics to emergency settings and aiding in procedures such as difficult cannulations and venepunctures.
