Why choose to learn Point Of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) versus learning formal ultrasound?
POCUS uses ultrasound to answer binary questions, such as “is there fluid in the abdomen or not?” or “is there hydronephrosis or not?”. In comparison, full departmental ultraound studies answer more in depth questions involving the size of the organs and assessing measurements and also vascularity which involves various doppler studies.
This makes POCUS easier to learn and access for the majority of clinicians, while providing you most of the answers you need to know from a departmental scan in an acute setting but with a simpler and portable handheld device.
